First Things First!

The temptation has been great to take advantage of the freedom the blogging phenomenon creates by posting my own thoughts about Hurricane Katrina . If I didn’t have an opinion about all the issues surrounding the disaster in New Orleans I would probably be the only person in the country without one. The fact is that I do have some very strong thoughts on this but at this point mine are surely no better informed than anyone elses. It’s just too easy to shoot from the hip at a time like this.

The true scope of this disaster will only be revealed in retrospect as will the culpability for the mistakes. That’s not to say that there are not questions that demand answers. The questions, though, ought to be honest ones that are truly looking for answers, not political booby traps. Those answers should then govern what is to be done and what heads must roll to prevent this kind of domestic meltdown from happening again.

Extreme reactions and political cheap shots are too easy right now. The first issue is relief for the people at Ground Zero. Let us see to that and ultimately the other political chips will fall where they may.

I have tried to stay on the fence politically, feeling extreme nausea when anything in least sounds political at family gatherings. I often have to turn on my most stern "mommy" voice to put MY daddy, sister and husband back in line with such volitile talk. But for this topic I will say unabashedly that George is an ass. While checking in patients at work last week I glanced up at the Tv in the waiting room. Georgie was saying something to the effect of "if you don't need gas don't buy it" I would be currently unemployed if I said what popped in my mind. How can we bomb a country thousands of miles away in a matter of hours and leave our own people to drown and die from dehydration, starvation and exposure to the elements?! I have become somewhat of a news whore when something big is happening. 9/11 had me sleeping on the couch for a week with the TV on 24/7. It has been the same with the Katrina story. If I was good at anything beside crying and hugging I would be down there to help. I am not sure what should have been down with this disaster looming off the Gulf Coast but what ever it was it should have been done faster and like clock work. These Hurricanes are not a surpise people! When Isabell tore through Virginia I worked at Home Depot. Imagine the local mall on Christmas Eve x5. I had no sympathy for the idiot who didn't have batteries. YOU KNEW THIS WAS COMING!!! YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN HEED AND GOTTEN YOUR STUPID BATTERIES BEFORE YOUR POWER WAS WIPED OUT!! Same for this situation! "You" knew this was coming. There are NO excuses for this.
Thats MY story and I am sticking to it (too)!
