New blog on the block!!

Welcome to Kyle and Rebecca of Kybecca fame. They have added another blog to the Fredericksburg blogosphere at Kybecca Blogs. Check it out and let me know what you think. I like it so far. Hopefully it will keep those of us who are waiting in great anticipation, up to date on the progress of the new tapas eatery they have planned for the space next to them.

Their blog has a nice hometown look and texture to it and it already has some really good info on wine.  Who would doubt that there will be more to come.

I'll be keeping an eye on it on a daily basis and will post a link to it on this blog as well.

House concert

Well my dear friend Ruth Golden has done it again...another house concert by musicians many of us might not get a chance to hear otherwise:

Dear Friends:

You heard correctly!  "Beaucoup Blue" is coming to Fredericksburg for a house concert!  Please save the evening of Friday, March 14 for this wonderful event.  More details to follow, but John Dill has graciously offered his beautiful log cabin the country (Spotsylvania) once again for the venue.  A $15 donation is suggested and we are asking you to bring a dish to share (appetizers) and/or a bottle of wine.

Check out the website, listen to the music, and get geared up for a special night of music .

Blog gone!

I have just been informed by the folks down at the Free Lance-Star that they are dropping my blog on their web site due to insurance company restrictions.

GWTW...almost...

Sunday’s forecast here was for high and gusty winds throughout the afternoon. They weren’t wrong this time. Stepping outside of Hyperion this afternoon at about 2 PM I heard the wrinkly sound of sheet metal blowing about in the wind. After a quick glance at the banners on the end of the museum building and the banners hung on the fencing across the street at the museum expansion construction I realized the the noise was coming from the metal roof of the Café New Orleans/Bourbon Room building on William Street. The wind had gotten underneath the metal roofing and turned it into a sheet metal kite that threatened to fly away with every gust. Broomfront Not only was the roof in danger of taking flight but the mortar holding the top level of bricks on the end wall was rapidly giving way and debris was falling to the street. Brooendon

Unsuspecting pedestrians could very easily have been seriously injured by the falling bricks but fortunately there were no casualties.

Debris2

A quick thinking customer across the street at Hyperion called the city and shortly after the Fredericksburg police and fire department arrived and secured the area. William Street was closed between Princess Anne St and Caroline Street was closed and stayed closed to both vehicular and foot traffic for the next hour and a half.

Fortunately the winds began to subside and those of us who had visions of catching that great photo of the whole roof sailing of into the clear blue sky got no such picture. A repair crew finally arrived and got onto the roof to nail boards into place to hold the flailing sheet metal in place until permanent repairs could begin. Crewandsteeple

Repair
Once that starts it will take a while to complete I would guess because there is going to be some rather delicate masonry repair to be done as well.Closeup2
